Learning styles

Understanding how people prefer to take in, process and apply new information helps L&D teams design more effective training. The most widely used framework is the VARK model, but several other approaches offer useful complementary perspectives.

Visual learners absorb information best when it is presented as images, diagrams, charts, mind maps, infographics or videos. They tend to think in pictures and benefit from colour-coding, spatial arrangements and visual metaphors. In a workplace setting, this group thrives with whiteboard sessions, slide decks rich in imagery and process flow diagrams.

Beyond VARK

Why this matters at work

No single style fits everyone, and labelling learners too rigidly can limit growth. The practical takeaway for managers and L&D teams is to design learning experiences that combine modes - visuals, narration, written reference material and hands-on practice - so every team member has multiple routes into the content.
