Training Plan: Belbin's Team Role Theory

Objective: To provide a comprehensive understanding of Belbin's Team Role Theory and how it can be applied to enhance team effectiveness.

Duration: 20 minutes (for 1-2-1 delivery)

Prep Time: 15 minutes (with no slide prep) - 60 minutes (with use of slides)

Training Agenda:

Introduction (2 minutes)

  • Greet the participant and explain the purpose of the training.
  • State the importance of understanding team roles for effective teamwork.

Session 1: Belbin's Team Role Theory (5 minutes)

  • Briefly introduce Dr. Meredith Belbin and his research on team roles.
  • Explain that Belbin identified nine team roles, each with distinct characteristics and contributions.

Session 2: Overview of the Nine Team Roles (7 minutes)

  • Describe each of the nine team roles, highlighting their typical behaviours and strengths:
    1. Plant
    2. Resource Investigator
    3. Coordinator
    4. Shaper
    5. Monitor Evaluator
    6. Teamworker
    7. Implementer
    8. Completer Finisher
    9. Specialist

Session 3: Self-Reflection (3 minutes)

  • Ask the participant to reflect on their own team role preferences.
  • Encourage them to identify which roles resonate with their natural tendencies.

Session 4: Application in the Workplace (2 minutes)

  • Discuss how understanding team roles can benefit the workplace.
  • Emphasise that diverse teams with complementary roles tend to perform better.

Session 5: Role Compatibility (1 minute)

  • Explain that effective teams often have a balance of different team roles.
  • Mention that sometimes individuals may need to adapt their roles to suit the team's needs.

Session 6: Case Study (2 minutes)

  • Present a brief case study or scenario where understanding team roles could resolve a workplace issue or enhance team performance.

Session 7: Q&A (1 minute)

  • Invite the participant to ask any questions or seek clarification.

  • Summarise the key points covered during the training.
