Coaching Scenario: Imagine the coachee is a team leader in a project-based organisation. Recently, there has been a conflict between two team members. One team member, Sarah, believes her ideas are not being considered, and the other, John, feels Sarah is overly critical of his contributions. This conflict is affecting team morale and productivity.

Coaching Agenda:

Introduction (2 minutes)

  • Welcome the coachee and introduce the coaching scenario.
  • State the importance of addressing workplace conflict constructively.

Session 1: Understanding Conflict (6 minutes)

  • Discuss the nature of workplace conflict, its causes, and the potential consequences.
  • Emphasise that conflict is normal but needs to be managed effectively.

Session 2: Active Listening (3 minutes)

  • Explain the importance of active listening in resolving conflicts.
  • Teach active listening techniques, such as paraphrasing, summarising, and asking clarifying questions.

Session 3: Empathetic Communication (3 minutes)

  • Discuss the role of empathy in conflict resolution.
  • Provide guidance on how to express understanding and empathy when discussing issues with team members.

Session 4: Conflict Resolution Styles (2 minutes)

  • Introduce different conflict resolution styles, such as avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration.
  • Discuss when each style might be appropriate.

Session 5: Conflict Resolution Process (3 minutes)

  • Outline a step-by-step conflict resolution process:
    1. Define the issue.
    2. Understand each party's perspective.
    3. Identify common interests.
    4. Generate potential solutions.
    5. Evaluate and choose the best solution.
    6. Implement the solution.
    7. Follow up and monitor progress.

Session 6: Coaching Roleplay (10 minutes)

  • Engage in a roleplay exercise where the coachee takes on the role of the team leader addressing the conflict between Sarah and John.
  • Encourage the coachee to apply the conflict resolution techniques discussed.

Session 7: Q&A (1 minute)

  • Invite the coachee to ask any questions or seek clarification.

Session 8: Application to the Scenario (2 minutes)

  • Discuss how the coachee can apply the conflict resolution strategies to the scenario with Sarah and John.
  • Encourage the coachee to consider scheduling a private meeting with the two team members.

Session 9: Conclusion and Next Steps (1 minute)

  • Summarise the key conflict resolution strategies covered during the coaching session.
  • Encourage the coachee to apply these techniques in their role as a team leader.
  • Mention any follow-up actions, such as scheduling the meeting with Sarah and John, and offer ongoing coaching support.

Closing (1 minute)

  • Thank the coachee for their participation and commitment to resolving workplace conflicts effectively.
  • Reiterate the importance of fostering a harmonious work environment.
  • Express willingness to provide further coaching and support as needed.
