Training Plan: Understanding Bruce Tuckman's Theory on Team Development

Target Audience: Adult learners in a workplace setting, particularly managers, team leaders, and employees involved in team dynamics.

Overview of Bruce Tuckman's Team Development Model (5 minutes)

  • Present an overview of Tuckman's model, which consists of five stages: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning.
  • Highlight that these stages are not necessarily linear and can occur repeatedly in team development.

Stage 1: Forming (5 minutes)

  • Explain the Forming stage, where team members get to know each other, establish roles, and set goals.
  • Discuss the characteristics and challenges in this stage.
  • Share tips for effective team development during Forming.

Stage 2: Storming (5 minutes)

  • Explain the Storming stage, where conflicts and disagreements may arise as team members assert themselves.
  • Discuss the characteristics and challenges in this stage.
  • Share strategies for managing conflict and facilitating communication during Storming.

Stage 3: Norming (5 minutes)

  • Explain the Norming stage, where team members start to resolve conflicts, establish norms, and build cohesion.
  • Discuss the characteristics and challenges in this stage.
  • Share strategies for fostering collaboration and teamwork during Norming.

Stage 4: Performing (5 minutes)

  • Explain the Performing stage, where the team functions at its highest level of productivity.
  • Discuss the characteristics and benefits in this stage.
  • Share strategies for maintaining peak performance and motivation during Performing.

Stage 5: Adjourning (3 minutes)

  • Explain the Adjourning stage, where the team disbands after completing its tasks or projects.
  • Discuss the importance of closure and acknowledging team achievements.

Group Discussion (4 minutes)

  • Divide participants into small groups.
  • Provide a case study or scenario related to team development.
  • Ask each group to discuss how they would apply Tuckman's theory to address the situation.
