Ten quick, low prep retrieval routines that use the testing effect and spacing to help learners remember more, for less planning time.
Ask most tutors why they highlight key terms in a handout or set a re-read task before a test, and they will tell you it works. It feels productive. Learners see the material again, colours appear on the page, confidence goes up. The trouble is that feeling of fluency is largely an illusion. Re-reading and highlighting create familiarity with the text, not durable memory of the content, and the research evidence on this is now very clear. What actually shifts information into long term memory is retrieval: forcing the brain to pull an answer out rather than simply recognising it on a page.
This is the testing effect, and it is one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology. Every time a learner has to retrieve something from memory, that memory becomes stronger and easier to retrieve next time. Combine this with spacing, deliberately leaving gaps between exposures to a topic rather than massing it all into one block, and you get a genuinely powerful, low cost way to improve long term retention. None of this requires new resources, new schemes of work or hours of preparation. It requires small changes to classroom routines. Here are ten you can use from Monday.
1. Two things from last week
Start a session by asking learners to write down two things they remember from last week's session, without looking at notes. This takes two minutes, costs nothing to prepare, and forces retrieval from a slightly wider gap than "what did we do five minutes ago at the start of the lesson."
2. Brain dumps
Give learners three minutes and a blank sheet. Ask them to write down everything they can remember about a topic, unprompted. No notes, no textbook. This is uncomfortable at first because it exposes gaps, but that discomfort is exactly the desirable difficulty that makes the practice effective. Follow it with two minutes where they check their dump against their notes and add anything missed in a different colour.
3. Low stakes quizzing
Five multiple choice or short answer questions at the start or end of a session, marked by learners themselves or in pairs, with no grade recorded. The purpose is not assessment, it is practice. Learners often assume quizzing is about checking what you know, when in fact the act of answering is what builds the memory, regardless of whether you got it right.
4. Retrieval grids
A three by three or four by four grid of questions covering topics from different points in the course, some from this week, some from a month ago, some from further back. Learners pick a row, column or diagonal to answer. This is quick to build once and can be reused and adapted for years.
5. Cops and robbers
Split the class into two groups. One writes questions on a topic, the other answers them, then swap. This works well as a settling task and doubles as a check on whether learners can construct decent questions, which is itself a sign of understanding.
6. Flashcards done properly
Flashcards fail when learners flick through them once and feel they know the content. Done properly, a flashcard is set aside as soon as it is answered correctly, and struggled cards return to the pile more often. This mimics spaced repetition and turns a familiar revision tool into a genuinely effective one. Encourage learners to write the question on one side only and resist the urge to write essay length answers on the back.
7. Interleaving topics
Rather than practising one topic exhaustively before moving to the next, mix questions on different topics within the same practice session. It feels harder and progress feels slower, but interleaving improves learners' ability to tell topics apart and select the right method or approach, which matters enormously in subjects with multiple similar techniques.
8. Exit tickets with a retrieval question
End a session with one question that draws on something taught earlier in the course, not just today's content. It takes thirty seconds to answer and gives you useful information about what has stuck.
9. Weekly recall quiz
A short, ungraded quiz every Friday covering the whole term so far, not just the current unit. This builds the spacing effect into your scheme of work without any extra planning once the question bank exists.
10. Verbal retrieval in pairs
Ask learners to explain a concept to a partner from memory, then swap roles. Explaining out loud is a stronger form of retrieval than simply thinking an answer, because it demands more precise recall.
Why this matters more than it looks
None of these routines need new resources or a rewritten scheme of work. What they need is a shift in mindset: away from believing that exposure equals learning, and towards understanding that effortful recall is what does the work. Making it stick as a habit
The biggest barrier to retrieval practice is not learner resistance, it is tutor habit. Build one routine into your planning template so it becomes automatic rather than something you remember to do occasionally. A word on learner pushback
Some learners will resist retrieval practice because it feels harder than passive review, and some will initially perform worse on a brain dump than they expected. This is normal and worth naming explicitly. Tell learners that feeling unsure during a brain dump is a sign the technique is working, not a sign they are behind. Framing the discomfort correctly prevents learners from giving up on a method that, given a few weeks, produces noticeably better recall.
