No employer, no LMS, no training budget and nobody keeping records for you. Here is how self-employed professionals keep CPD credible and affordable.
Employed professionals have someone else partly doing this for them: mandatory training gets booked, an LMS records completions, appraisal forces an annual conversation. Freelancers have none of that, and the same regulatory obligation.
The three real problems
Nobody is tracking it. There is no system quietly logging your completions. If you do not record it, it does not exist.
It costs you twice. A training day is the fee plus the day you did not bill. That makes structured CPD feel disproportionately expensive, and it is why formal or verifiable minimums are the part freelancers most often miss.
Isolation. Participatory CPD assumes colleagues. Working alone, there is no team meeting, no supervision, no corridor conversation to count.
Building a record that holds up
Log the work-based learning first, because it is where most of your development actually happens: a new client sector you had to research, a regulation change you had to master, a tool you learned, a project that went wrong and what you changed afterwards. It is legitimate CPD and freelancers systematically fail to claim it.
Then add:
- Professional body webinars, usually included in membership and often live and interactive
- Free supplier and standards-body training, which is frequently high quality
- Professional reading of standards, guidance and research
- Podcasts and recorded conference sessions
Solving the participatory problem
If your scheme requires interaction, build it deliberately:
- Peer supervision - one or two others in your field, monthly, an hour, structured. Fully claimable and genuinely useful.
- Professional body branch or network events, often local and cheap
- Communities of practice and moderated online groups with live sessions
- Mentoring - being mentored or mentoring someone else both count
- Speaking or delivering training - preparation plus delivery, and it markets you at the same time
Making it affordable
Budget CPD as a business cost at the start of the year rather than treating it as a shortfall you fund in December. Many training costs are allowable business expenses where the training maintains or updates skills used in your existing trade - the rules differ for training that creates a genuinely new line of business, so check your position or ask your accountant.
Book the expensive item early in the year, when you can still choose the quiet week.
The record is entirely on you
No leaving-date deadline forces you to extract it, which sounds like an advantage until you realise nothing prompts you either. Set a monthly reminder, keep the log in something that belongs to you personally, and check your subtotals twice a year against the actual requirement.
Freelancers who do this find an unexpected benefit: the log doubles as a capability record for tenders and pitches. Being able to show current, evidenced expertise wins work, which is not something an employed colleague ever needs it for.
Keep your CPD in one place
A record only helps if it exists before you need it. Our free CPD tracker logs an activity in seconds, tallies your hours automatically, keeps your reflections with the entry, and exports a clean PDF whenever you need evidence. Free for life for individuals - and the record belongs to you, not your employer.
