Learning with purpose

Start with the knowledge your role needs next.

A regulatory update is more useful when you can explain how it changes your work. Identify the gap, choose learning that addresses it and reflect on what you will do differently. Keep evidence without storing client details.

01

Record what you did

Add the activity, date, provider and time spent. Courses are only the start - record supervision, reading and learning from practice too.

02

Capture what changed

Add a reflection while the learning is fresh: what you learned, why it matters and what you will do differently in practice.

03

Share when you choose

Export a clear PDF or CSV, or create a read-only link for an appraiser. You stay in control of your record.

The rules at a glance

CII CPD scheme requirements

The CII scheme applies to qualified members. The CII is a professional body, not the financial services regulator. Your role may also have separate employer or regulatory obligations.

RequirementWhat appliesWhat to check
Total CPDAt least 35 hours in a 12-month periodLearning should address development needs relevant to your role
Structured CPDAt least 21 of the 35 hoursActivities need defined learning objectives and outcomes; a certificate alone does not establish relevance
Planning and reflectionIdentify needs, undertake learning and evaluate itKeep objectives, dates, time, learning outcomes and reflection
Annual periodA 12-month periodCheck the period and declaration arrangements that apply to your membership
Evidence and exceptionsKeep a supporting recordCheck CII rules for career breaks, retirement and any other exceptions
  • An online activity is not automatically structured simply because it is a course. Check its objectives and relevance.
  • The 35/21 CII requirements do not replace separate FCA or employer obligations; financial adviser requirements can differ.
  • Passport does not certify structured status or make your CII declaration. Keep an accurate record and follow the current scheme rules.
  • The CII recording tool is optional. Record a reflective statement for each activity in your own words; CII says reflective statements must not be AI-generated.
  • The 21 structured hours are a minimum, not a requirement for 14 unstructured hours. All 35 hours can be structured.

Your personal professional record

A record that stays with you

Keep the same personal Passport through changes of employer, role and working pattern. Your employer does not automatically see your personal reflections.

Private by default

Your employer does not automatically see personal reflections. You decide what to share.

Evidence alongside the learning

Attach supporting files to CPD entries and export a PDF or CSV for your own records. You decide what to share and must check what your body requires.

No lock-in

Download your record as a PDF or CSV whenever you need it.

WorkplaceHero helps you organise your CPD. Check current CII guidance for your role and circumstances. WorkplaceHero is not affiliated with or endorsed by CII. WorkplaceHero is an independent record-keeping tool. We do not accredit learning, certify compliance or guarantee that a regulator will accept your record - meeting your regulator's requirements remains your responsibility. We research regulator and professional body guidance from official sources, record the source and the date we last checked it, and review entries when rules change. Requirements can change without notice, so always confirm the current rules, exemptions and deadlines with your regulator or professional body before relying on them. If you spot something out of date, tell us and we will check and correct it. Report an update

Questions, answered

Before you start

How many CPD hours does the CII require?
Qualified members must complete at least 35 hours annually, including at least 21 structured hours, under the CII CPD scheme. Check exceptions and additional role-specific obligations.
Is every course structured CII CPD?
No. Structured learning needs defined learning objectives and outcomes relevant to development needs. Keep evidence and check the CII scheme rules; a course label alone is not sufficient.
Are CII and FCA requirements the same?
No. CII membership CPD does not replace separate FCA or employer requirements. Check the rules for your actual role, particularly if you give retail investment advice.
Can Passport verify CII compliance?
No. Passport helps you organise learning, evidence and personal reflections. You decide which activities meet the rules and remain responsible for declarations and other obligations.
What does free Passport include?
Your personal CPD log, hours tracking, your own reflections, evidence attached to entries, CSV import and PDF or CSV record exports. No card or trial is required. PassportPro is optional. Passport does not decide whether an activity meets your body’s requirements or submit official records.
