Learning with purpose

Turn a clinical learning moment into a better next step.

A recovery debrief or a journal club may change a future decision. Record the learning and its impact while it is fresh. Routine clinical work is not automatically CPD: the purposeful development and reflection are what you need to describe.

01

Record what you did

Add the activity, date, provider and time spent. Courses are only the start - record supervision, reading and learning from practice too.

02

Capture what changed

Add a reflection while the learning is fresh: what you learned, why it matters and what you will do differently in practice.

03

Share when you choose

Export a clear PDF or CSV, or create a read-only link for an appraiser. You stay in control of your record.

The rules at a glance

RCVS annual CPD requirements by role

The standard annual minimum differs for practising veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses. Check your registration status and any RCVS-approved arrangements.

RequirementWhat appliesWhat to check
Veterinary surgeons35 hours per calendar yearRelevant learning across your professional role
Registered veterinary nurses15 hours per calendar yearUse the veterinary nurse requirement, not the surgeon total
Annual period1 January to 31 DecemberKeep completed learning in the correct year
ApproachPlan, do, record and reflectExplain relevance, learning and impact on your practice
Official recordRCVS 1CPDUse 1CPD for the official record; Passport does not sync to it
  • CPD is not limited to courses. Relevant case discussions, reading and other purposeful learning may contribute.
  • Reflection is required for activities to count. The same annual requirement applies to full-time and part-time professionals; hours cannot be carried forward.
  • Vets on the non-practising register are exempt. Ask RCVS about its CPD-pause process for personal circumstances rather than assuming an exemption.
  • The shared Passport veterinary preset starts at 35 hours. RVNs should change their personal annual target to 15.
  • Keep client, patient and colleague identifiers out of personal reflections.

WorkplaceHero helps you organise your CPD. Check current RCVS guidance for your role and circumstances. WorkplaceHero is not affiliated with or endorsed by RCVS. WorkplaceHero is an independent record-keeping tool. We do not accredit learning, certify compliance or guarantee that a regulator will accept your record - meeting your regulator's requirements remains your responsibility. We research regulator and professional body guidance from official sources, record the source and the date we last checked it, and review entries when rules change. Requirements can change without notice, so always confirm the current rules, exemptions and deadlines with your regulator or professional body before relying on them. Questions, answered

Before you start

How many CPD hours do vets and veterinary nurses need?
The standard annual minimum is 35 hours for practising veterinary surgeons and 15 for registered veterinary nurses. Check any circumstances or arrangements that affect you with RCVS.
Does Passport replace RCVS 1CPD?
No. RCVS requires 1CPD for your official record. Passport is a separate personal space for learning, evidence and reflections, without automatic transfer.
Can learning from cases count as CPD?
Relevant purposeful learning from cases can contribute when you record what you learned and reflect on its relevance and impact. Routine clinical work is not automatically CPD.
How should an RVN set their Passport hours target?
The shared veterinary preset starts at 35 hours. An RVN should change their personal annual target to 15, while still checking current RCVS guidance and keeping the official 1CPD record.
What does free Passport include?
Your personal CPD log, hours tracking, your own reflections, evidence attached to entries, CSV import and PDF or CSV record exports. No card or trial is required. PassportPro is optional. Passport does not decide whether an activity meets your body’s requirements or submit official records.
