Learning with purpose

Keep the improvement, not just the attendance certificate.

Record why you chose an activity, what you learned and how it maintains or improves your practice. Your CPD should reflect your full scope of work, including clinical and non-clinical roles, and feed your personal development planning.

01

Record what you did

Add the activity, date, provider and time spent. Courses are only the start - record supervision, reading and learning from practice too.

02

Capture what changed

Add a reflection while the learning is fresh: what you learned, why it matters and what you will do differently in practice.

03

Share when you choose

Export a clear PDF or CSV, or create a read-only link for an appraiser. You stay in control of your record.

The rules at a glance

GMC CPD, appraisal and revalidation

The GMC requires relevant CPD every year but does not mandate a universal number of CPD hours or points for revalidation. A royal college or employer may have separate expectations.

RequirementWhat appliesWhat to check
CPDUndertake relevant learning every yearCover current and anticipated roles across your whole scope of practice
Hours or pointsNo universal GMC numerical quotaDo not treat a personal 50-hour target as a GMC requirement
Reflection and PDPPlan learning and reflect on its impactDescribe how learning maintains or improves practice
AppraisalNormally annual for licensed doctors outside trainingFollow your designated body and responsible officer arrangements
RevalidationNormally every 5 yearsYour individual date and pathway take priority
  • CPD is one of six supporting-information types. Quality improvement, significant events, patient feedback, colleague feedback, and complaints and compliments also matter.
  • Doctors in training have a separate pathway. Doctors without a responsible officer or suitable person have additional arrangements.
  • Five appraisals are not an invariable requirement: an approved missed appraisal does not necessarily have to be caught up.
  • Passport is not a designated appraisal system, and does not recommend or grant revalidation. Keep patient and colleague identifiers out of reflections.

Before you declare or submit

Prepare your CPD for appraisal

Use this as a preparation aid, not a compliance assessment or a replacement for official instructions.

  1. 1Check your appraisal arrangements and individual revalidation date.
  2. 2Review learning across every part of your scope of practice.
  3. 3Connect completed activities to your learning needs and PDP.
  4. 4Record what you learned and its effect on your practice.
  5. 5Gather suitable evidence, without confidential patient information.
  6. 6Review the other supporting-information categories separately.
  7. 7Transfer the information required by your designated appraisal system yourself.

Keep the same personal Passport through changes of employer, role and working pattern. Your reflections do not automatically become visible to your employer.

Private by default

Your employer does not automatically see personal reflections. You decide what to share.

Evidence alongside the learning

Attach supporting files to your CPD entries and export a PDF or CSV for your own records. You decide what to share and must check what your body requires.

No lock-in

Download your record as a PDF or CSV whenever you need it.

WorkplaceHero helps you organise your CPD. Check the current GMC guidance for your registration and circumstances. WorkplaceHero is not affiliated with or endorsed by GMC. WorkplaceHero is an independent record-keeping tool. We do not accredit learning, certify compliance or guarantee that a regulator will accept your record - meeting your regulator's requirements remains your responsibility. We research regulator and professional body guidance from official sources, record the source and the date we last checked it, and review entries when rules change. Requirements can change without notice, so always confirm the current rules, exemptions and deadlines with your regulator or professional body before relying on them. Questions, answered

Before you start

Does GMC revalidation require 50 CPD hours a year?
The GMC does not mandate a universal number of CPD hours or points for revalidation. Undertake relevant CPD every year and check any separate royal-college, employer or appraisal expectations.
Is revalidation always exactly every five years?
Five years is the normal cycle for licensed doctors, but your individual date, circumstances and pathway take priority. Doctors in training and those without a responsible officer connection have different arrangements.
Does my CPD log replace the appraisal portfolio?
No. Passport supports personal CPD recording and reflection. Your designated body or appraisal system still controls its required portfolio and submission process.
Is CPD the only supporting information I need?
No. GMC guidance also covers quality improvement, significant events, feedback from patients and colleagues, and complaints and compliments. A CPD log alone is not a complete revalidation portfolio.
What does free Passport include?
Your personal CPD log, hours tracking, your own reflections, evidence attached to entries, CSV import and PDF or CSV record exports. No card or trial is required. PassportPro is optional and adds premium tools such as AI coaching and certificate reading.
