Learning with purpose

Record the outcome, not only the time.

From 1 January 2026, the RICS framework puts more emphasis on structured learning, activity outcomes and an annual reflection. Capture why you chose each activity and what changed, so your personal record supports a meaningful review of your development.

01

Record what you did

Add the activity, date, provider and time spent. Courses are only the start - record supervision, reading and learning from practice too.

02

Capture what changed

Add a reflection while the learning is fresh: what you learned, why it matters and what you will do differently in practice.

03

Share when you choose

Export a clear PDF or CSV, or create a read-only link for an appraiser. You stay in control of your record.

The rules at a glance

RICS CPD requirements from 1 January 2026

These rules apply to qualified AssocRICS, MRICS and FRICS members. Candidate assessment requirements are separate. Complete learning in the calendar year and formally submit the official record afterwards.

RequirementWhat appliesWhat to check
Annual hoursAt least 20 hoursAt least 10 must be structured; relevant to your practice
Learning deadline31 DecemberFinish the learning for that calendar year
Official record and declaration31 January of the following yearRecord digitally and formally submit through RICS My Account or the RICS app
Mandatory topicsThree categories on a rolling three-year basisGlobal professional and ethical standards; AI, data and technology; sustainability
Topic learningAt least 1 structured hour per categoryCover each category at least once every three CPD years
Outcomes and annual reflectionOutcomes for every activity, plus one annual reflective statementWhy activities were chosen, their impact and implications for next year
  • The 2026 terminology is structured and unstructured learning, rather than simply formal and informal.
  • Activities ordinarily last at least 30 minutes; similar shorter activities can be combined under the RICS rules.
  • Eligible substantial structured programmes may allow up to 20 hours carry-forward, with no more than 10 in each of the next two years. Conditions apply; this is not automatic for ordinary courses.
  • Exemptions require an application to RICS, normally by 31 December. A partial exemption still requires at least 10 annual hours and mandatory-topic coverage.
  • Passport does not sync to RICS, classify eligibility or apply carry-forward and exemptions for you. Use official RICS records and decisions.

Questions, answered

Before you start

Is RICS still 20 hours with 10 formal hours?
The total remains at least 20 hours each calendar year, but the 2026 rules use at least 10 structured hours and also require learning outcomes, annual reflection, a declaration and mandatory-topic coverage.
Is the RICS deadline 31 December or 31 January?
Complete the calendar-year learning by 31 December. Record and formally submit the official CPD record and annual declaration by 31 January of the following year. For 2026 learning, submission is due by 31 January 2027.
Must I complete all mandatory topics every year?
No. Each of the three topic categories must be covered at least once every three CPD years on a rolling basis, through at least one hour of structured learning. Check how the 2026 rules apply to your record.
Can I carry forward every extra CPD hour?
No. Carry-forward is conditional for eligible substantial structured programmes. The operative rules allow up to 20 hours total, no more than 10 in each of the following two years. Check programme eligibility and RICS guidance.
Does Passport replace the official RICS CPD app?
No. Passport is a personal record-keeping tool. Qualified members must record and formally submit through RICS My Account or the official RICS app, including their annual declaration.
What does free Passport include?
Your personal CPD log, hours tracking, your own reflections, evidence attached to entries, CSV import and PDF or CSV record exports. No card or trial is required. PassportPro is optional and adds premium tools such as AI coaching and certificate reading.
