Learning with purpose

Make the learning relevant to the work you actually do.

Continuing competence starts with reflecting on your practice, not choosing a number of courses. Identify where your knowledge or skills need development, act on those needs and evaluate whether the learning helped. Keep legal knowledge, professional skills and ethical obligations in view.

01

Record what you did

Add the activity, date, provider and time spent. Courses are only the start - record supervision, reading and learning from practice too.

02

Capture what changed

Add a reflection while the learning is fresh: what you learned, why it matters and what you will do differently in practice.

03

Share when you choose

Export a clear PDF or CSV, or create a read-only link for an appraiser. You stay in control of your record.

The rules at a glance

The SRA continuing competence approach

The SRA does not prescribe a minimum number of CPD hours. The old 16-hour rule is not the current requirement. This page concerns SRA-regulated solicitors and relevant registered lawyers, not every legal profession.

RequirementWhat appliesWhat to check
ReflectionRegularly review all aspects of practiceUse the Statement of Solicitor Competence and feedback to identify gaps
PlanningIdentify learning needs and maintain a planLink planned learning to your role and responsibilities
ActionAddress identified development needsChoose suitable learning rather than collecting hours alone
Recording and evaluationKeep an up-to-date record and assess effectivenessDescribe how needs arose, what you did and what changed
Annual declarationConfirm continuing competence through the applicable renewal processPractising-certificate renewals for 2026/27 ran from 1 to 31 October 2026
  • In-house solicitors are covered too. Check SRA guidance for overseas practice, exempt solicitors and registered-lawyer arrangements.
  • The 2026 consultation on strengthening continuing competence is not itself a rule change. Follow operative SRA guidance, not proposals.
  • Keep client identities, privileged information and confidential matter details out of personal reflections.

Before you declare or submit

Before your annual competence declaration

Use this as a preparation aid, not a compliance assessment or a replacement for official instructions.

  1. 1Review your whole scope of practice against the Statement of Solicitor Competence.
  2. 2Identify learning needs from matters, supervision, feedback and role changes.
  3. 3Check that your development plan addresses those needs.
  4. 4Record the activities you completed and their relevance.
  5. 5Evaluate what changed in your advice, skills or professional judgement.
  6. 6Check current SRA renewal instructions and make the applicable annual declaration.

Your personal professional record

A record that stays with you

Keep the same personal Passport through changes of employer, role and working pattern. Your reflections do not automatically become visible to your employer.

Private by default

Your employer does not automatically see personal reflections. You decide what to share.

Evidence alongside the learning

Attach supporting files to your CPD entries and export a PDF or CSV for your own records. You decide what to share and must check what your body requires.

No lock-in

Download your record as a PDF or CSV whenever you need it.

WorkplaceHero helps you organise your CPD. Check the current SRA guidance for your registration and circumstances. WorkplaceHero is not affiliated with or endorsed by SRA. WorkplaceHero is an independent record-keeping tool. We do not accredit learning, certify compliance or guarantee that a regulator will accept your record - meeting your regulator's requirements remains your responsibility. We research regulator and professional body guidance from official sources, record the source and the date we last checked it, and review entries when rules change. Requirements can change without notice, so always confirm the current rules, exemptions and deadlines with your regulator or professional body before relying on them. If you spot something out of date, tell us and we will check and correct it. Report an update

Questions, answered

Before you start

Does the SRA still require 16 CPD hours?
No. The continuing competence approach replaced the old 16-hour requirement and became compulsory on 1 November 2016. There is no prescribed minimum number of hours.
Does continuing competence apply to in-house solicitors?
Yes. SRA continuing competence applies to solicitors holding practising certificates, including in-house solicitors. Check official guidance for your registration and practice arrangements.
What should a continuing competence record include?
The learning needs you identified, how you identified them, your plan, activities completed and your evaluation of their effectiveness. Relevant legal, professional and ethical learning all matter.
Does Passport make my annual declaration?
No. Passport organises your personal learning and reflections. You make the applicable declaration through the SRA renewal process yourself.
What does free Passport include?
Your personal CPD log, hours tracking, your own reflections, evidence attached to entries, CSV import and PDF or CSV record exports. No card or trial is required. PassportPro is optional and adds premium tools such as AI coaching and certificate reading.
