About this course
Most workplace fires are preventable. This course gives nominated fire marshals, supervisors and staff the knowledge to spot fire risks, understand the law and act with confidence if a fire breaks out.
It covers how fire starts and spreads, the duties placed on responsible persons by fire safety legislation, the five steps of fire risk assessment, and what to do on discovering a fire or hearing the alarm - including evacuation, roll call and the safe use of fire-fighting equipment.

Course content
The course is delivered in short, bite-size sections that learners can stop and restart at any point.
- Section 1
Fire
Common causes of fire, the elements fire needs to ignite and burn, and what happens when fuel, oxygen or heat is removed.
- Section 2
Hazards of fire
How fire causes injuries and fatalities, how smoke and flame spread through a building, and how fires are classified.
- Section 3
Fire safety legislation
The legislation and guidance governing fire safety, and the roles, duties and responsibilities it places on employers and individuals.
- Section 4
Assessing risk
The five steps of fire risk assessment, what to do if you discover a fire or hear the alarm, and active and passive protection systems.
Who it is for
Nominated fire marshals and fire wardens, managers and supervisors, and any employee working in premises with a fire risk. It also suits anyone working towards a Level 2 fire safety qualification.
Entry requirements: No prior knowledge is needed. The course is written in plain English and suitable for all staff.

Fully online and self-paced
Learners work through the course at their own pace and can pause and resume where they left off.

Knowledge checks
Short checks at the end of each section so learners can see what has landed before moving on.
Average completion time is around 2 hours, though learners can take as long as they need and return as often as they like.
How it is assessed
Knowledge checks run throughout the course so learners can test understanding as they go. The course finishes with a multiple-choice assessment taken online at the end. Learners who do not pass first time can retake the assessment.
Certification
Learners receive a Highfield Online Training digital certificate as soon as they pass the end-of-course assessment. Certificates are downloadable straight away and can be saved to a CPD log or staff training record.
Refresher guidance: Most employers refresh this training every 12 months, or sooner if legislation, roles or workplace risks change.
