About this course
This course covers the knowledge element of First Aid at Work. It takes learners through the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider and the treatment of a wide range of injuries and illnesses, from minor wounds to life-threatening emergencies.
It is designed to be studied online before, or alongside, the practical and assessed element of a regulated First Aid at Work qualification, so classroom time is spent practising skills rather than sitting through theory.
What learners cover
- The role, responsibilities and legal duties of a workplace first aider
- Assessing an incident scene and carrying out a primary survey
- CPR, use of an AED, choking and the recovery position
- Bleeding, shock, burns, fractures and head injuries
- Medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, seizures and anaphylaxis
Course content
The course is delivered in short, bite-size sections that learners can stop and restart at any point.

The role of the first aider
Legal duties, first aid provision, hygiene, personal safety and accurate record keeping.
- Section 2
Assessing an emergency
Scene safety, primary survey, calling for help and handing over to the emergency services.
- Section 3
Life-saving skills
Unresponsive casualties, CPR, defibrillation, choking and the recovery position.
- Section 4
Injuries and illnesses
Bleeding and shock, burns, bone and muscle injuries, head injuries and common medical conditions.
Who it is for
Appointed workplace first aiders, managers responsible for first aid provision, and anyone preparing for a regulated First Aid at Work qualification.
Entry requirements: No prior knowledge is needed. This is the theory element only - a regulated First Aid at Work certificate also requires practical training and assessment, which we can arrange separately.
How it is delivered
Fully online and self-paced
Learners work through the course at their own pace and can pause and resume where they left off.

Works on desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile, with audio, video and written transcripts throughout.
Interactive throughout
Scenarios, exercises and images keep learners engaged rather than clicking through slides.
Knowledge checks
Short checks at the end of each section so learners can see what has landed before moving on.
Average completion time is around 3 hours, though learners can take as long as they need and return as often as they like.
How it is assessed
Knowledge checks run throughout the course so learners can test understanding as they go. The course ends with a multiple-choice assessment taken online. Learners who do not pass first time can retake it.
Certification
Learners receive a Highfield Online Training digital certificate as soon as they pass the end-of-course assessment. Certificates download straight away and can be saved to a CPD log or staff training record.
Refresher guidance: First aid certification is normally renewed every three years, with an annual refresher recommended by the HSE.
