About this course

Paediatric first aid theory for anyone responsible for babies and children, including early years staff, teachers, childminders, sports coaches and parents.

It covers the differences between treating adults, children and infants, life-saving skills including infant and child CPR, and the common injuries and illnesses seen in childcare settings, alongside EYFS record keeping expectations.

  • The paediatric first aider's role and EYFS requirements
  • Assessing an unresponsive baby or child and calling for help
  • Infant and child CPR, choking and the recovery position
  • Bleeding, burns, bumps, breaks and head injuries in children
  • Childhood illnesses including febrile seizures, asthma, meningitis and anaphylaxis

Course content

The course is delivered in short, bite-size sections that learners can stop and restart at any point.

  1. Section 1

    Paediatric first aid basics

    Responsibilities, consent, hygiene, first aid kits and recording accidents in a childcare setting.

  2. Section 2

    Unresponsive children

    Primary survey for babies and children, infant and child CPR, AED use and the recovery position.

  3. Section 3

    Injuries

    Choking, bleeding, burns and scalds, fractures, head injuries, bites, stings and poisoning.

  4. Section 4

    Illnesses

    High temperature and febrile seizures, asthma, allergic reactions, meningitis and diabetes.

Who it is for

Early years practitioners, nursery and school staff, childminders, sports coaches, foster carers and parents. It also suits anyone preparing for a regulated Paediatric First Aid qualification.

Entry requirements: No prior knowledge is needed. This is the theory element only - a regulated Paediatric First Aid certificate also requires practical training and assessment, which we can arrange separately.

Learners work through the course at their own pace and can pause and resume where they left off.

Knowledge checks

Short checks at the end of each section so learners can see what has landed before moving on.

Average completion time is around 3 hours, though learners can take as long as they need and return as often as they like.

How it is assessed

Knowledge checks run throughout the course so learners can test understanding as they go. The course ends with a multiple-choice assessment taken online. Learners who do not pass first time can retake it.

Certification

Learners receive a Highfield Online Training digital certificate as soon as they pass the end-of-course assessment. Certificates download straight away and can be saved to a CPD log or staff training record.

Refresher guidance: Paediatric first aid certification is normally renewed every three years.
