Who this is for
- You want to formally mentor student nurses or HCAs
- You are being asked to sign off competency in the workplace
- You are considering a move into clinical education or practice development
- You want a qualification that is portable across NHS Trusts and private care
- You need something you can study around shift patterns
Why this path fits
For a nurse moving into teaching, assessing or mentoring, the fastest route in is a Focus Awards Level 3 assessing qualification. The Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment covers exactly what a preceptor or clinical assessor does day-to-day: observing, giving feedback and signing off competence against standards.
If you want to teach classroom-based or blended sessions (inductions, mandatory training, clinical skills teaching), pair the assessing qualification with a teaching qualification. Together they give you the credibility and evidence base that Trusts and universities look for when appointing practice educators, clinical facilitators and senior mentors.
Both qualifications are Ofqual-regulated, delivered fully online with tutor support, and portable across employers - so if you move Trust, change specialism or move into higher education, they travel with you.
