Most people prepare for their annual review the night before. Here is a simple preparation system that turns the review into your best career conversation of the year.
Your performance review is one of the few hours in the year when your manager's full attention is on your growth. Most people waste it by turning up unprepared. Here is how to walk in ready.
Start two weeks before, not the night before
Give yourself one focused hour, two weeks out. That is enough time to gather evidence without it becoming a project.
The five things to bring
1. Your achievements, with evidence. List your five to eight biggest wins. For each: what you did, what the result was, and proof (numbers, feedback, the thing you built). Vague claims get vague rewards.
2. Your learning record. Courses, informal learning, new skills applied. A year of logged CPD shows investment in yourself - and it is exactly the kind of evidence managers find hard to argue with.
3. Your objectives, reviewed honestly. Go through last year's objectives before your manager does. Met, partly met, missed - with reasons. Owning the misses with a lesson attached is stronger than hoping they are not mentioned.
4. What you want next. A review is a negotiation as much as an assessment. Know what you are asking for: a promotion conversation, training budget, a stretch project, a pay review. One clear ask beats five vague wishes.
5. Questions for your manager. "What would I need to demonstrate to reach the next level?" turns the review into a development plan.
The week before
- Re-read your notes once
- Send your manager a short summary if your organisation welcomes it - it shapes the agenda
- Sleep on it; do not rehearse scripts
The mindset shift
A prepared review is not about defending yourself. It is about making it easy for your manager to say yes to whatever you want next.
