Annual objectives examples you can actually use

5 min read

Annual objectives examples for common roles, plus how to write SMART objectives and track progress with your CPD log.

Good annual objectives are specific enough to measure and realistic enough to survive a busy year. Here are examples you can adapt, whatever your role.

What makes an objective work

The reliable test: could someone else tell whether you achieved it? "Improve communication" fails. "Run the weekly team briefing and share a written summary the same day" passes.

Examples by role

Customer-facing:

  • Reduce average complaint resolution time from 5 days to 3 by December
  • Achieve a customer satisfaction score of 90% across the year

Team leader or manager:

  • Hold documented one-to-ones with every team member each month
  • Deliver the system migration with no more than one week of slippage

Administrator or coordinator:

  • Automate the monthly report so it takes under an hour to produce
  • Keep filing and records audit-ready, with zero findings in the annual audit

Practitioner (care, education, health):

  • Complete 35 hours of CPD, including the mandatory safeguarding refresher
  • Introduce one evidence-based technique per term and review its impact with your supervisor

Write your own in three steps

  1. Start with the outcome your team or organisation needs
  2. Add a number, date or observable change
  3. Note the support or learning you will need to get there

That third step is where CPD comes in. If the objective needs a skill you do not have yet, the training to build it belongs in your development plan.

Track progress, do not just set and forget

Objectives fail when they only resurface at the annual review. Log related CPD and wins as they happen, and review your objectives quarterly. When review season arrives, your evidence is already organised.
