How to remember what you learn: knowledge retention that works

6 min read

Most training is forgotten within weeks. These evidence-based techniques - spaced review, retrieval practice and teaching others - make learning stick.

You finish a course feeling sharp, and three weeks later you can barely recall the key points. That is not a personal failing - it is how memory works. The good news: a few simple techniques dramatically improve retention.

Why we forget

Memory research is consistent: without revisiting, we forget most new information within days. One-off training events are the worst format for retention - yet they are how most workplace learning happens.

Four techniques that actually work

1. Retrieve, do not re-read. Testing yourself beats re-reading notes every time. After any learning, close the material and write down what you remember. The effort of recalling is what strengthens the memory.

2. Space it out. Reviewing something after a day, a week and a month beats three reviews in one afternoon. Put two short review reminders in your calendar after any significant learning.

3. Apply it immediately. Using new knowledge within 48 hours is the single strongest retention tool. Learned a new technique? Find a reason to use it this week, even on something small.

4. Teach someone else. Explaining something to a colleague exposes the gaps in your understanding and fixes the knowledge in place. Offer a five-minute summary at your next team meeting.

Your CPD log as a retention tool

Writing a reflection after learning is retrieval practice in disguise. Reviewing your log quarterly is spaced repetition. The record-keeping habit and the memory habit are the same habit.

A simple routine

  1. After learning: write a reflection from memory, not from your notes
  2. Within 48 hours: apply one thing
  3. Within a month: review the entry and add what happened when you applied it
