The 15-minute monthly habit that accelerates careers

5 min read

A simple monthly learning review - 15 minutes, once a month - compounds into promotions, stronger reviews and a CPD record that writes itself.

The people who progress fastest are rarely the ones who do the most training. They are the ones who notice what they are learning and use it deliberately. That takes about 15 minutes a month.

The habit: a monthly learning review

Once a month, same day, answer four questions:

  1. What did I learn this month? - anything: a course, a mistake, a conversation, a article
  2. What changed because of it? - a decision, a process, a conversation handled differently
  3. What do I want to learn next? - one thing, linked to your goals
  4. What is my next small step? - something you can do in the next two weeks

Write the answers in your CPD log. That is the whole habit.

Why it works

  • It compounds. Twelve short reviews a year become a rich record of growth that most colleagues simply do not have.
  • It feeds your appraisal. Review season stops being a memory test - you already have twelve months of evidence.
  • It builds your promotion case. "Here is what I learned and applied every month this year" is a stronger argument than any single course certificate.
  • It catches drift. If two months pass with nothing learned, you notice and fix it.

Make it stick

  • Put a recurring 15-minute slot in your calendar, first Friday or last day of the month
  • Pair it with something you already do, like your end-of-month report
  • Keep it short on purpose - the moment it feels like homework, it dies

Start this month

Open your CPD log, answer the four questions for last month, and set the recurring reminder. That is month one done.
